Decorative Pen and Inktense patterns

I was ill yesterday and couldn’t sit at my desk and paint with the gouache paints. Which is probably a good thing, because it’s not necessarily wise to get too into one thing – or medium. Instead, I got an early night, but before that I did some drawing with my pens, and then started colouring them with my Inktense pencils. I finished them off tonight, and I’m very pleased with the results – though the scans don’t really capture them fully.

I kind of wanted to get an almost stained glass effect here. The bold black with the bright, but somewhat dusty, colours. I love the contrast of the black against the green and then the further contrast of the red and blue fruit. I’m very pleased with this.

And I did this pattern, too. I think it has a Mexican ceramic feeling to it, and this was somewhat confirmed when my eldest daughter said ‘Oooh, it’s like a tile.’

I’m pleased I got the Inktense pencils out for a bit, as I think I needed a reminder that I do have other media that I love – not just the new-found gouache love.

Here are some photos of the pictures which, though not brilliant, I think give a hint of how much better they look in person.

Edited to add: I’ve just submitted this for this week’s Illustration Friday topic, which is ‘Tree’. Since I love drawing trees, I may well do some more this week! [9 November 2012]
